About the Photographer

Doug Gorham spent nearly 25 years in the Navy as a broadcast journalist.  He hosted several radio and television programs, anchored newscasts,  did play-by-play sportscasting, and shot and edited hundreds of television news stories and expanded features.  Additionally, he wrote hundreds of feature articles about Sailors and Marines that were published in newspapers across the country.  He was assigned to American Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) Philippines for four and a half years and later managed two large overseas AFRTS stations, one in Italy and the other in Spain.  He also had oversight responsibility for a station in Portugal.  He served on several Navy ships including the Navy destroyer USS Benjamin Stoddert,  the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa, and the aircraft carrier USS Independence.  After being promoted to the rank of Master Chief, he served his final three and half year tour in the Navy as the Media Action Officer and Media spokesperson for the Naval Surface Forces in the Pacific Fleet.  He was interviewed by international, national, and local San Diego media for a variety of Navy stories. 

Shortly after retiring from the Navy in 1999, he attained his California Multi-Subject Teaching Credential and was hired by the Chula Vista Elementary School District (the largest elementary school district in California) in 2000.  He was with the district for nearly 20 years and spent the last 13 and a half years as a physical education instructor.  He also coached Coed basketball teams, taught an after school journalism program which featured an on-line school newspaper,  produced a variety of training videos to help classroom teachers teach physical education , and started and hosted a monthly podcast to help classroom teachers in the district get more comfortable teaching physical education.  During this time, he also wrote articles that were published in San Diego Family Magazine.

Doug’s most recent passion is photography.  He loves all types of photography including sports, landscapes, macro, music, special events, and portraits.  He also enjoys doing composites and color correction in photoshop.  Additionally he likes working in Lightroom Classic with its many new features.  He recently graduated from a Certificate Program in Digital Photography with Session College of Professional Design and some of his photos have appeared in the school's Student Gallery.   https://www.sessions.edu/campus-news/digital-storyteller-photography/

In October of 2023, he was selected as a recipient of the Session Collge of Professional Design Outstanding Graduate Award.
